The past simple in English is equivalent to the indefinite imperfect and past tense of the Spanish past.
We use the past simple to complete actions in the past.
Rules:
- It is formed by the infinitive of the verb with the ending -ed. This form is the same for all people singular and plural:
Ex: I worked yesterday. / He worked yesterday. / They worked yesterday.
- There are some exceptions of spelling:
Ex: Verbs ending in -e -d only add: hope - I Hoped; decide - I Decided
- Verbs ending in consonant + y, change the -y to -i before -ed: hurry - I hurried; study - I Studied.
- Generally, verbs that end in a vowel + consonant, double the consonant before -ed: shop - I shopped; refer - I Referred
